One thing I feel confident about is ETs are wise and friendly and thus won't harm us should they be there! My conjuncture is that phase transition on the intelligence scale happens only if we tame our egos and become collectively conscious! These creatures respect life and intelligence. Thus, they could be quietly observing us and praying for us to reach beyond ego towards oneness. Not enough place to talk about the phase transition dynamics!
